What is Pre-K ELLA?
Pre-K Early Literacy Learning in Arkansas (Pre-K ELLA) is a professional development opportunity focusing on the behaviors, skills, and concepts that are part of emerging literacy in preschool children. As Pre-K ELLA participants, early childhood professionals will participate in 30 hours of training consisting of discussion and hands-on activities relating to emerging literacy.
The topics covered include: an overview of Pre-K ELLA, Social and Emotional Development, Learning Environments, Language Development, Phonological Awareness, The Role of Play, Dramatic Play, Read-Alouds, Poetry, Nursery Rhymes and Fingerplays, Storytelling, Shared Reading, Writing, Environmental Print, Learning about Letters, Sounds and Words, Observation and Assessment, and Family Literacy.
Pre-K ELLA participants receive a variety of materials, including an early language and literacy text book and a collection of handouts and resource pages. Early childhood programs with staff participating in Pre-K ELLA will also receive other teacher resource books relating to language and literacy and a collection of quality children’s books.
Pre-K ELLA is offered throughout Arkansas in a variety of geographic locations. ASU Childhood Services is pleased to be a training site for the Pre-K ELLA in the Northcentral, Northeast, and Mid-Delta regions of the state.
